Josh Brolin Talks ‘Thanos’ Role In MCU; “It’s [Him] Against Everyone!”

Josh Brolin talks about why he decided to take on the role of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealing more about the circumstances which led to him playing the villain and what it is about the Mad Titan which really appeals to him as an actor.

We still don’t know when and where Thanos will next rear his ugly head in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Avengers: Infinity War on the way, you know it has to be soon! Talking to Superhero Hype about Inherent Vice, Josh Brolin talked about what led to him landing the role and why he decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I love the idea of Thanos. Ultimately, it’s Thanos against everyone. Why wouldn’t you do that?” Fair enough, but how did the chance to play the Mad Titan come about exactly? “Thanos came along because of my good friend Louis D’Esposito. He and I used to train together. We did ‘Hollow Man’ together. He called me up and started talking about this thing. It was nice because I could intimately talk to him about it. What I liked. What I didn’t like about the whole idea of it… It was really exciting because of the possibilities that it could be come. Not as an idea or as a blockbuster, but just as something different. It’s a character mentality.” What do you think about Brolin as Thanos?

Will we soon have the Marvel/DC Cinematic Universe?!

When Rupert Murdoch tried to buy Time Warner, we jokingly speculated that a merger could potentially lead to a movie featuring the Justice League and X-Men (though there’s really no reason why that couldn’t have happened had the $80 billion bid been accepted). However, the Marvel and DC Universe becoming one could actually be one step closer as The Hollywood Reporter names Walt Disney as a potential buyer – along with Google and Apple – should China’s wealthiest man Wang Jianlin fail to add the company to his empire. “The prospect of combining Disney’s Marvel with Time Warner’s DC Comics might be too compelling to ignore,” the site states, adding, “Plus CNN would give Disney the cable news asset it lacks. Disney’s market cap as of Aug. 8 was $149 billion compared with Time Warner’s $63 billion, which gives Disney CEO Bob Iger more leverage than Murdoch might have had.” Though it’s on a much larger scale, Disney could then bring both Warner Bros. and DC Comics under their control with the likes of Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar. Could that mean that Batman and Spider-Man will share the same comic book universe while Captain America and Superman battle it out on the big screen? The logistics of such a merger are hard to figure out, but it sounds like a possibility. What do you guys think?

Marvel’s Inhumans?

There has been various bits of news about Marvel’s The Inhumans all over the place. From Vin Diesel to Terrigen Mist, the Point of Geeks gathered all the evidence and shares what it might mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

By PointOfGeeks - 8/14/2014

Marvel has identified it’s next franchise and while it is a lesser-known property, it makes a lot of sense for the studio. The Inhumans were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, making their first appearance in 1965 in the pages of the Fantastic Four. The comic revolves around a royal family of superbeings led by Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans. After the blockbuster success of their wacky and risky film, Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel is continuing with their plan of expanding the scope of their cinematic universe. This isn’t an impulsive development either, they have long planned for this next phase to include Ant-ManDr. Strange and The Inhumans. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige spoke about their potential last year to EW:

84503

This is the opportunity for Marvel Studios to add more social commentary and subtext to their films. The beauty of the X-Men franchise is that while it’s action-packed and fun, it does carry a strong message of acceptance of others and the struggle for civil rights. It seems this notion hasn’t escaped Feige, since they have begun shopping a script for The Inhumans written by Joe Robert Cole. Collider explains that once they find a director for the project, Marvel will allow him or her to rewrite the script to fit their own vision. Provided they stick to the story beats in the initial script, which presumably will have greater ramifications in future films. This same process was used in the development of Guardians of the Galaxy with Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, so it seems they may have found a new formula. Hopefully this will nip poor communication between future directors and the studio, avoiding fiascos like the pre-production for Ant-Man.

However, Diesel isn’t the only important reason for an Inhumans film, their genesis is crucial to the overall Marvel mythos. Remember the Celestials that were mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy? In Marvel’s mythology they were the ones who created life on Earth. The Kree experimented on primitive Earthlings and then eventually moved on to other worlds, leaving their test subjects to their own devices (very Prometheus-like). The Inhumans went on to create an advanced civilization for themselves. Some procreated with standard humans and passed on the dormant gene to their ancestors. When Maximus, the younger brother of Black Bolt, released the Terrigen Mist it activated the dormant genes in the population, causing a new sub-species of super-beings. This origin story is crucial because it seems to tie into the Marvel cinematic universe in so many ways.

The Inhumans franchise has connections to Guardians of the Galaxy,  Agents of Shield and eventually to the Avengers. Since Marvel does not own the X-Men film franchise they are unable to label characters as “mutant.” The presence of Inhumans blood lines laying dormant in many people’s DNA, looks to be the explanation for some people being “miracles,” as was described in Captain America: The Winter Solider. On the TV side, Agents of Shield introduced a Kree alien and they have even injected Kree blood into several characters, including series’ leads Agent Coulson and Skye. The Inhumans will provide a reference for what is happening to their physiology or we may find that a few of your fan-favorites are already inhuman. This may also tie into the Avengers: Age of Ultron.  It could provide a basic explanation for how Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch get their miraculous powers, since they are mutants in the comics, but not in the cinematic world.

Ultimately all things in the Marvel cinematic universe seem to be leading to the third Avengers film and a fight not for Earth, or even the galaxy, but a battle for the universe. With every film released, Marvel is expanding the scope of their storytelling and the reach of the worlds that they have created. It would seemingly be harder to shepard all of these different properties into an Avengers film since the scope will have gotten so large. However the interconnected nature of the Inhumans story lends itself to be a glue to bring the universe together. Diesel seems to allude to this fact in an interview last fall with IGN:

“I get the call, I go down to Marvel. A great meeting. It was even talking about something so big I can’t even talk about because it’s like the merging of brands in a way, which I won’t get into. That was something way, way, way, way, way down the road.”

In a broad sense, The Inhumans will be the connective tissue between the newly explored cosmic side of Marvel and the odd mutations popping up on Earth. Since Marvel does not own the X-Men film franchise, they are unable to label characters as “mutant.” The presence of Inhumans’ blood lines laying dormant in many people’s DNA, looks to be the explanation for some people being “miracles,” as was described in Captain America: The Winter Solider’s button scene. On the TV side, Agents of Shield introduced a Kree alien and they have even injected their blood into several characters, including series leads Agent Coulson and Skye. The Inhumans will provide a reference for what is happening to their physiology or we may find that a few of your fan-favorites are already inhuman.Inhumans-Black-Bolt-e1407868766325

The news of The Inhumans getting formally on the production track signifies the look of the Marvel universe may soon change. The Guardians of the Galaxy are the studio’s newest iconic characters, add in Vin Diesel as Black Bolt, and whatever charismatic star winds up playing Dr. Strange, and you have the type of star power that can fill the void of Robert Downey Jr’s eventual departure. The property while largely unknown or unnoticed at this juncture, may truly be the key to the next ten years of success for Marvel films. We can’t wait to bring you the latest as the story develops.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Earns $4.1M

Embedded image permalink

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (which has been met with unanimously positive reviews) opened in North America last night to a pretty impressive $4.1 million. Hit the jump for details on that and more on what the movie is expected t earn this weekend…

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released in both North America and a handful of other international locations today (though it doesn’t hit many of the latter until the World Cup concludes later this month), and it kicked off its run with late Thursday evening and midnight showings domestically last night. There, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel earned an impressive $4.1 million and prerelease tracking indicated that the critically acclaimed sequel could earn upwards of $60 million this weekend. Of course, tracking has been very hit and miss this year, so Fox are estimating a slightly more conservative $55 million debut. With so many great reviews and positive word of mouth, it could easily pass that though. In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened with $54 million, and the sequel – which cost roughly $170 million to make – has ever chance of topping the $481.8 million at the worldwide box office grossed by the first instlment.

Hulk Rampage!? AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON scene details?

Filming for The Avengers: Age of Ultron is gearing up for its last week in Johannesburg, South Africa, before the production moves north to Italy. While the Marvel sequel’s “action photography sequences” have been filmed quietly this past week, we’ve received word that things got a bit more enthralling and… green over the weekend, or Friday. “I could see some sort of action scene where Hulk was battling someone but not too sure who was it,” a local, Ismail Ebrahim ‏, informed CBM. “I could make it out clearly because they use a huge green head whenever they’re filming Hulk scenes. …They used a guy dressed normally but had on a backpack with 2 iron poles holding up hulk’s chest upwards and then he was doing whatever he had to do… scaring the people. By the looks of it, Hulk will probably play a major role in the Johannesburg shoot.”
Ismail Ebrahim ‏ further mentions that Hulk gets thrown into trucks and there are lots of people, extras, fleeing away from the Green Goliath. Beyond who or what the Hulk is battling against, this scene raises some other questions. With the first 10 minutes of The Avengers: Age of Ultron said to be taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, could this mean we’ll see the Hulk in full glory from the get-go, as opposed to his mild-mannered alter-ego Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo)? Maybe. It’s also possible that the Marvel sequel’s climatic sequence could return to Johannesburg, during which this particular scene could take place. Regardless, don’t expect to see the principal cast members in costume anytime soon as it has also been reported that the stars won’t commence principal photography until April, and they won’t be shooting outside of the United Kingdom. This applies especially to whatever will be filmed in Italy next month.
